For Safe Net,” engagement” means “engaging people to produce specific, measurable results.” The most common way to do this is to engage people on teams that are accountable to produce clear, measurable and extraordinary results. We use the term for these kinds of teams as “results based teams”.
We have all had experience with “issues based teams” or “relationship based teams”. These are generally well intentioned and produce little. They are often time consuming and justified by terms like “at least we are talking”. Often safety committees and labour management committees and other standing committees devolve into relationship based or issues based processes. While we are not being critical of these teams, it is important to distinguish them from what we are focused on – “results based teams”. In our experience, teams that are not accountable to produce a specific, measurable set of results, rarely produce specific measurable results.
Engaging people implies enrolling them rather than forcing them to participate. A forced march or coercion is at the low end of the engagement process. Where people are enrolled to produce a result and have consciously and enthusiastically volunteered to do so is at the high end of the engagement process.
